Biografia
Dalla metà degli Anni 80 fino quasi tutti gli Anni 90 con l'uscita dei primi due Cd della sua produzione, la sua chitarra appare al top in gran parte degli spazi musicali, sia nell'ambito jazz e funky che in quello pop, collaborando a diversi Cd di Mina, di Renato Zero, di Tullio De Piscopo, dei Dirotta su Cuba e di tanti altri cantanti di punta nel panorama della musica leggera italiana.
Diventa beniamino e un modello da seguire per tanti giovani chitarristi italiani; i lettori delle riviste specializzate infatti lo eleggono per cinqua anni consecutivi "miglior chitarrista jazz e fusion" cosa che non si ripete negli anni successivi perch´ il suo nome vien messo in un virtuale Olimpo, a cui accedevano i musicisti votati per 5 anni consecutivi, fuori classifica, per poter votare e dar lustro ad altri talenti emergenti.
Nel 1995 viene invitato in Francia da Marcel Dadi al Festival "Les nuits de la guitare" ed entra in una dimensione internazionale salendo sullo stesso palco di John Scofield, Philipe Caterine, Toots Thielemans, Mike Stern, Bireli Lagrene, suscitando stima e ammirazione ovunque, oltre che per la sua grande energia musicale anche per la sua grande verve e simpatia. Questo, negli anni a seguire, lo fa scegliere per essere addirittura il Padrino del Festival di Sete sur Mere, nel Sud della Francia, dove, in quell'occasione, si esibisce con Bireli Lagrene e con Silvan Luc e dove poi tornerà ancora due volte incontrando Pat Metheney e altri grandissimi nomi.
Partecipa in quel periodo anche al festival di Marsiglia e di Tolosa dividendo la serata e il palco con Scott Henderson.
Quindi viene nuovamente invitato a Patrimonio dove oltre che col suo quartetto, suona in duo con Bireli Lagrene aprendo la serata di Larry Carlton.
Più avanti fa un bellissimo concerto in trio a Parigi con Philipe Caterine e Bireli Lagrene ricevendo una standing ovation dal pubblico Parigino.
La Televisione Francese gli dedicò uno special di un'ora. Insomma, la Francia lo stava adottando e apprezzando davvero tanto, ma il suo voler sempre non sottostare a nessuna costrizione e regola lo fa allontanare da certe dinamiche; inoltre, la grande passione per il ciclismo gli fa spesso rifiutare cose che gli impedirebbero di allenarsi e gareggiare. Da non credere, ma è così.
Nel 2000 esce per la BMG un cd straordinario dal titolo "With the eyes of a child" che lo ricatapulta in testa a tante classifiche sia di vendita che di gradimento e la cosa che Gigi ama di più è suonare dal vivo e fa serate ovunque, senza mai sottilizzare e formalizzarsi, cosa che da molti è vista come un limite e un abbassare il proprio livello, ma è in mezzo alla gente e suonando per loro che diventa irresistibile, sia per quello che fa che per come lo fa e si pone, le sue serate sono dei raduni di persone che si divertono sorridono e gustano musica e sentimenti. In quel periodo si esibisce in diversi concerti con un cantante superlativo col quale era da subito nata un'intesa straordinaria: Carl Anderson il compianto "Judas" di Jesus Christ Superstar.
Negli ultimi anni ha partecipato a tantissime manifestazioni suonando in diversi contesti e collaborando con Mike Stern Pat Martino e Larry Carlton in situazioni didattiche grazie all'Accademia del suono e dividendo il palco con Tommy Emmanuel a Monteroduni all'Eddie Lang Jazz Festival e con molti altri grandi nomi.
Nel 2008 riceve il premio Enriquez, ambito riconoscimento teatrale che per la prima volta viene assegnato a un musicista con la seguente motivazione: "...Per l'impegno e la coerenza artistica unite a una grande forza comunicativa."
Nello stesso anno registra il suo ultimo cd, dal vivo, in un locale molto caro a Gigi e al pubblico delle notti di Milanesi le "Scimmie". L'album esce nel 2009 e trova moltissimi consensi e rivela un chitarrista ormai personalissimo, con un proprio tocco e con un modo di far musica e di suonare ormai identificabilissimi e unici.
Soprattutto esce in questo cd lo spirito della gioia e del divertimento che Gigi instaura sia sul palco coi suoi collaboratori che con il pubblico e anche la scelta particolarmente riuscita di fondere le atmosfere jazzistiche con la tradizione italiana. Molto suggestiva la versione di "E se domani" in coppia con Aida Cooper; e travolgente il viaggio nella tradizione con "O sole mio", "Mia bela Madunina" e "Roma nun fa la stupida stasera".
Da anni è diventato endorser e immagine Italiana per alcuni marchi di primo livello in particolare di Ibanez, affiancato ad artisti come John Scofield e soprattutto George Benson al quale è sempre stato in qualche modo associato, ma soprattutto con il Marchio italiano di Marco De Virgiliis già al top nel mondo con gli amplificatori MarkBass e che ora, con Frank Gambale e Gigi Cifarelli, sta portando in alto una nuova linea di amplificatori per chitarra dal nome "DV Mark" e, cosa molto rilevante per Gigi, è il fatto che uscirà sul mercato una linea di amplificatori "signature" a lui dedicata. Questo è indubbiamente un segnale di grande stima e considerazione e al contempo un attestato di qualità e livello nei confronti del suo nome che è ormai riconosciuto da tutti come garanzia di qualità e di forza ovunque.
Nell'ultimo periodo ha proposto un progetto dedicato a George Benson per uno spettacolo benefico sulla ricerca per le malattie gravi che è poi diventato graditissimo e richiesto, presentato quindi da poco a Torino in un grande palco come quello del "Gruvillage" dove si svolge un festival ormai consacrato ai massimi livelli.
La serata è stata molto bella e apprezzata anche da Dennis Chambers e Eric Mariental (col quale Gigi aveva già avuto una collaborazione discografica) ai quali Gigi ha aperto il concerto e che alla fine lo hanno voluto su palco insieme a loro per chiudere la nottata suonando con grande energia e gioia.
Un altro progetto molto simpatico e intrigante è quello nato insieme all'amico Ronnie Jones, sempre presente nei suoi nei cd e nelle sue collaborazioni e sempre ricambiato nell'affetto e nella stima dal cantante statunitense, che propone grandi classici del mondo soul blues e jazz riarrangiati da Gigi per la voce coinvolgente di Ronnie.
Molte di queste cose sono attualmente in programmazione e in svolgimento su molte location, infatti oltre alla sua presenza al Gruvillage Festival, Gigi è appena stato insieme a Stefano Di Battista, Pippo Matino, Jorge Bezzerra, Roger Biwandu, Ernesto Vitolo, Javier Girotto, a tenere seminari e concerti a Villanova D'Albenga, per una settimana coinvolgente e di altissimo livello per la manifestazione intitolata "Entro Jazz". Sarà inoltre, col suo progetto, al festival di Arona sulla bellissima piazza del lungolago dove aprirà la serata per l'ambito riconoscimento letterario "Premio Fogazzaro" a Menaggio; quindi ad Atri Jazz, in Abruzzo, e al memorial per Giulio Capiozzo (mai dimenticato batterista degli Area), in Romagna.

GIGI CIFARELLI
From the mid 80's until the end of the 90s with the release of his first 2 albums, his guitar appears at the top in most of the musical spaces, both in jazz, funky and pop, collaborating in several albums by Mina, Renato Zero, Tullio De Piscopo, Dirotta su Cuba and many other leading singers in the Italian light music scene, he becomes a favorite and a model to follow for many young Italian guitarists, readers of specialized magazines in fact elect him for 5 consecutive years "best jazz and fusion guitarist" something that is not repeated in later years because his name is put in a virtual off chart Olympus accessed by the musicians voted for 5 consecutive years to vote and give prestige to other emerging talents.
In '95 he is invited by Marcel Dadi at "Les nuits de la guitare" festival in France and he enters on the international scene as he shares the stage with John Scofield, Philip Caterine, Toots Thielemans, Mike Stern and Biréli Lagrène eliciting esteem and admiration everywhere, not only for his great musical energy but also for his great verve and sympathy, in fact in the following years he is chosen to be even the godfather of the festival of "Sete sur Mere" in the south of France, where he performs with Biréli Lagrène and Silvan Luc and where he will come back twice to meet Pat Metheney and other great names; he also participates in the Marseilles and Toulouse festivals sharing the evening and the stage with Scott Henderson.
He is invited again to play and in addition to his quartet, he plays in duo with Biréli Lagrène opening the evening of Larry Carlton.
Later he made a beautiful concert in trio in Paris with Philip Caterine and Biréli Lagrène receiving a standing ovation from the Parisian public.
The French TV dedicated him a one hour special, in short, France was adopting and appreciating him a lot, but his will of never wanting to undergo any constraint and rule does away with certain dynamics, moreover his passion for cycling often makes him refuse things that would prevent him from training and competing ....unbelievable but true.
In 2000 he released an album for BMG titled "With the eyes of a child" which brings him back at the top of many sales and liking rankings and the thing that Gigi loves the most is playing live and spending evenings everywhere without having to subdue and formalize, which is seen by many as a limitation and a lowering of his own level, but it is in the midst of people and playing for them that he becomes irresistible, for what and how he does it, his evenings are gatherings of people who enjoy themselves, smile and enjoy music and feelings. In this period he makes several concerts with a superlative singer with whom there was an extraordinary agreement: Carl Anderson, the late Judas of the Jesus Christ Superstar show.
In recent years he has participated in many events, playing in different contexts and collaborating with Mike Stern, Pat Martino and Larry Carlton in didactic situations thanks to the Academy of Sound and sharing the stage with Tommy Emmanuel in Monteroduni at the Eddie Lang Jazz Festival and with many other big names.
In 2008 he received the Enriquez award, a theatrical recognition that for the first time was assigned to a musician with the following motivation: for the commitment and artistic coherence combined with a great communicative power.
In the same year he recorded his last live album, in a place very dear to him and to the Milanese night's audience the "Scimmie", the album comes out in 2009 and has many consents and reveals a very personal guitarist, with his own touch and a way to make music and play which by now is identifiable and unique.
In this album the spirit of joy and fun that Gigi establishes on stage with his collaborators and with the public comes out also thanks to the particularly successful choice to blend the jazzy atmospheres with the Italian tradition, very impressive the version of "E se domani" with Aida Cooper and the overwhelming journey in the Italian tradition with "O' sole mio", "Mia bela Madunina" and "Roma nun fa la stupida stasera".
He has become an endorser and Italian image for some top-level brands in particular for Ibanez and he is flanked by artists such as John Scofield and especially George Benson with whom he has always been in associated some way, but above all with the Italian brand of Marco De Virgiliis already at the top in the world with MarkBass amplifiers and who is now is bringing up a new line of guitar amplifiers named DV Mark with Frank Gambale and Gigi; what is very relevant for Gigi is the fact that a line of "signature" amplifiers dedicated to him will be released on the market, this is undoubtedly a sign of great esteem and consideration and at the same time a certificate of quality and level towards his name that is now recognized by all as a guarantee of quality and strength everywhere.
In the last period he proposed a project for a charity show dedicated to George Benson for the research on serious diseases that then became very welcome and requested, recently presented in Turin on the Gruvillage stage where a festival now consecrated to the highest levels takes place.
The evening was very beautiful and appreciated by Dennis Chambers and Eric Mariental (with whom Gigi had already had a record collaboration) to whom Gigi opened the concert and at the end they wanted him on stage with them to close the night playing with great energy and joy.
Another very nice and intriguing project is the one born with his friend Ronnie Jones, always present in his albums and collaborations; the American singer has always reciprocated in the affection and esteem with Gigi, which offers great classics of the soul blues and jazz world rearranged by Gigi for the intriguing and engaging voice of Ronnie.
Many of these things are currently on schedule and running in many locations, in fact in addition to his presence at the Gruvillage Festival, Gigi has just been with Stefano Di Battista, Pippo Matino, Jorge Bezzerra, Roger Biwandu, Ernesto Vitolo and Javier Girotto to hold seminars and concerts for an interestin… Ernesto Vitolo and Javier Girotto to hold seminars and concerts for an interesting and compelling week at Villanova D'Albenga for the "Entro Jazz" event, then he will be at the Arona Festival with his project, then he will open the evening for the literary recognition "Premio Fogazzaro" in Menaggio, then at Atri Jazz in Abruzzo and at the memorial for Giulio Capiozzo (never forgotten Area drummer) in Romagna.
